HOW TO SWADDLE A NEWBORN

Wondering how to swaddle a newborn using swaddle blankets or when to stop swaddling your baby? You're in the right place! Swaddle blankets are not only practical but simply adorable!

It's an entirely new environment for newborns once they are born as they still seek the connection, warmth, and coziness they experienced in the womb. That's why baby carriers and wraps can be incredibly helpful for parents, especially of newborns.

Keep your baby close, and hands-free!, as you and your baby both adjust to life together. Whether you're looking for a safe and comfortable way to take your newborn out or baby is teething and just wants to be carried while you're working around the house, SpearmintLOVE has a variety of carriers to meet your babywearing-needs.

Swaddling a newborn is another way to gently introduce them to life outside the womb while still providing that snug, cozy physical sensation newborn seek. A swaddled baby's startle reflex is also softened which may mean more sleep for baby and you!

How to Swaddle

1. Spread the swaddle blanket flat and fold down one corner

2. Lay baby face up on the swaddle so baby's head is above the corner that's folded

3. Straighten baby's left arm before pulling swaddle's left corner over baby's body where you then tuck the swaddle between baby's right arm and body

4. Straighten baby's right arm before pulling swaddle's right corner over baby's body and then under their left side

5. Loosely fold the bottom corner, tucking it under one side of baby

6. Ensure the swaddle blanket is not too tight (According the AAP, you should be able to fit at least two or three fingers between swaddle and baby's chest). Baby's legs must be able to bend up and out. Read more on the guidelines for “hip-healthy swaddling.

Wearable sleep sacks and swaddlers that follow the AAP guidelines can be easy, helpful alternatives to using a swaddle blanket. Consider trying the ErgoBaby Swaddler.

When to Stop Swaddling

When baby shows any signs of rolling over, it is time to stop swaddling.
